College for Kids Summer Youth Programs

College for Kids is a summer program at 博彩网站 that exposes participants between ages 11 and 16 (unless otherwise specified) to learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) fields. College for Kids will give tweens and teens the chance to have fun while learning!

Summer 2024 Programs

Week 1:  June 18 & 20

CPR and First Aid

Days: Tuesday and Thursday
Times: 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Designed specifically for mature young people interested in caring for others (i.e. Babysitting, Camp counseling, or Lifeguarding) to learn essential CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and First Aid skills for infants, children, and adults. Aimed at empowering young individuals with the knowledge and confidence to respond effectively in emergency situations, this course combines interactive learning methods with practical demonstrations.  Students will receive the AHA (American Heart Association) certificate upon successful completion.  

Week 2:  June 25 & 27

It's Your Turn, Take the Mic

Days: Monday through Friday

“It’s your turn, take the Mic”, is a workshop on public speaking that seeks to empower our children to have confidence, self-esteem, and develop the poise and communication skills needed to engage in effective communication while speaking in public. The program aims to shape our teens and tweens' sense of self and presence. “Take the Mic” will include instruction on dressing for success, body language and the mechanics of public speaking. This course will teach students how to successfully communicate with clarity, concision and cohesion.

Future STEAMers

Days: Monday through Friday

The Future STEAMers will provide immersive experiential learning opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM). Activities will contain an integrated and creative problem-solving process that blends art and science to prepare youth to develop innovative thinking.

Week 4:  July 15 - 19

Origami

Days: Monday through Friday
Times: 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Origami students will learn the traditional Japanese art technique of assembling paper into a variety of decorative or representational forms and polyhedral, (solid figures with 6 or more faces). The instructor will assist students with understanding how Origami is used in many STEM areas such as: Space telescope, surgical tools, robotics, material folding, etc. We will use this week to discover a new or already enjoyed leisure activity that can also improve spatial learning.

Intro to Acting

Days: Monday through Friday

What makes theater so powerful? It teaches us to discover how we feel while giving us the courage to express ourselves! Throughout this program, our main goals will be building self-awareness, cultivating self-confidence, and exploring our inner creativity. Students will learn teamwork through theater games, acting exercises, and improvisation. A portion of each day will be spent on the creation of a short, original performance piece. Therefore, students will learn how to create, stage, and work together to put on a production for family and friends at the end of the week. It is our hope that each child will leave the class with a newfound belief that there are no limits on our own creativity.

Airbrushing

Days: Monday through Friday
Dates: July 15-19

Does your child love painting? Students will use vibrant colors and designs to learn how to operate an airbrushing machine to design projects.

This program is offered in partnership with the STEM Starter Academy and HSI STEM.

Math Matters

Days: Monday through Friday
Times: 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Ages: 13-17
Cost: Free

This camp explores various mathematical applications and projects from financial literacy to physics. Students will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities while engaging with mathematical concepts.

This program is offered in partnership with the STEM Starter Academy and HSI STEM.

Create Mobile Apps

Days: Monday through Friday
Times: 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Ages: 13-17
Cost: Free

This session is an introduction to the exciting world of developing apps for mobile and tablet devices. Students will create applications for mobile computing devices that culminate with a student portfolio of Android Apps.

This program is offered in partnership with the STEM Starter Academy and HSI STEM.

Week 5:  July 22 - 26

The Art Basic Design course is an introduction to the elements of two-dimensional design. This course will provide the foundation needed to engage students using a variety of visual problems and creative processes. Students will be able to identify and apply the 9 Principles of Design in their Art. This includes Contrast, Emphasis, Movement, Repetition, Proportion, Rhythm, Balance, Unity, and Variety. Instruction will include a series of visual exercises that will have students explore the formal elements of design using lines, shapes, values, textures, colors, space, and form. Students will understand the history of graphic arts utilizing referenced sources as well as individual investigation projects.

Basketball and Physics

Days: Monday through Friday
Times: 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Springfield Ballers will help players of all abilities develop their athletic skills and enhance their skill set in all positions. Our staff will be college basketball coaches and will provide players personalized instructions, defensive/offensive instructions, participation in scrimmages, proper warm-ups, cool-down techniques, and health and nutrition fun facts. The Springfield Ballers' core values are a focus on academics, respect, community, and leadership. We will work with your child by enriching their intellectual and social skills through sports in a challenging and safe environment. Each child will walk away from this summer program with drills and skill development routines to progress their individual basketball skills with the purpose of creating a complete and well-rounded student-athlete.

Lunch

Lunch will not be provided. Parents are responsible for providing lunch and students should come prepared with a packed lunch. Peanut products are not allowed.
